Diagnostic Radiologist
Duties and Responsibilities: Nearly all physicians
examine patients, obtain medical histories, diagnose illnesses, or prescribe
and administer treatment for people suffering from injury or disease. According
to American Medical Association statistics, 1.2 percent of those physicians specialize
in radiology. A radiologist correlates medical image findings with other
examinations and tests, recommends further examinations or treatments, and
confers with referring physicians (the doctors who send patients to the
radiology department or clinic for testing.
Salary: $402,000 for radiologists, but the individual salaries
in its survey ranged from a low of $225,000 to a high of $450,000.
Education:
Radiologists
are physicians who use cutting-edge imaging technology to examine organs and
tissues inside the body in gentle, noninvasive ways. Their expertise in
physics, anatomy and the disease process allow them to diagnose injuries and
illnesses so treatment can begin. A growing subset of these specialists called
interventional radiologists performs surgical procedures under imaging guidance
in order to minimize damage to healthy tissue.
